Gartner Research Managing VP, Jim Holincheck, writes about his frustration with Business Intelligence (BI) systems that are nothing more than reporting systems. He points out that these BI systems underperform in helping end users identify underlying causes for problems and make corrective decisions. Hollincheck believes most end users do not use these types of BI systems because they require them to do an enormous amount of analysis on their own to determine what steps to take.
